(More customer reviews)Let me cut right to the point: as far as action games go, this is THE game to own. It wouldn't matter if you bought another action game, because they will never compare to this. Unlike most games where they throw you right into the action, Half-Life lets you adjust to a normal, every-day setting for a while, just before bringing it crashing down over your head via a dimensional portal to an alien world. See, you play a normal, bland scientist guy named Gordon Freeman who works at a secret research base miles underground. This place makes the fabeled Area 51 seem like a little shack. Anyway, you show up and work, only your experiment is interrupted when it explodes and opens a gateway to an alien world. Now these aliens aren't really friendly, and start crossing over to our world to tear up some stuff. You race to the surface, where you know help will be and you can get them to help save your friends, right? Big mistake, pal. The help comes in the form of military commandos, on a mission to wipe out this little disaster, and this involves silencing you and your co-workers permenately. So, now what? The artwork is amazing, the story is compelling. Words simply can't deescribe this masterpiece worthy of the title Game of the Year. Plus, for those of you new to action and first-person shooter games, there's even a short but handy training area where you learn how to do the stuff you need to know for this game. Overall, this is the best bet for any computer game fan.

(More customer reviews)Despite the picture on the box, most of the scenery takes place in Czech Republic, followed by small bits in France and Mexico. The storyline becomes apparent during the game play, and is not difficult to follow, even if you pay attention to a television program instead of this game. The play involves talking to people, finding objects by mousing over them, combining and using objects in the inventory, and solving a few puzzles.
The good parts of the game:
.The graphics are pretty good, and include rain (lots and lots of rain), a bit of snow, and realistically walking people.
. The puzzles are easy enough to solve without being a pain or a bore.
. You can't get lost anywhere, because the game will not let you either use the wrong items (match on the map to burn it up) or get lost, because you can't go too far without performing certain tasks or finding certain objects.
. You can turn this game off and go to bed without an aching to get back.
The bad parts:
. The game sometimes hangs, usually if there is another program running in the background.
. The tasks can be tedious and annoying, such as talking to a certain person, then another person, then back again, then walking away for a bit, then walking back and talking again.
. The characters have odd accents - there are several cockneys, and the bad guys sound like Sean Connery. The main character, Martin, has a deep, pleasant voice.
. If you miss a bit of dialogue, or even an entire conversation, you can't go back and play it again, unless, of course, you saved the game just before that point.
. The grammar, punctuation, and spelling in the dialogues are severly lacking.
. Every so often Martin exclaims, "I'd better get out of here quickly" as he saunters off slowly. Luckily, everyone else is even slower so he easily gets away.

(More customer reviews)This game was good and I'm not disappointed with this purchase. It had potential to be really good, but there is only one game I give credit as being excellent, which is Still Life.
This is a point & click 3rd person adventure/crime/investigate type of game. At first I thought it might not be ok because they said it has 100 puzzles/riddles and 5000 lines of dialogue. I don't care much for puzzles, I just want the story & adventure to play. The puzzles are not time consuming or illogical to the game (no arcades, mazes, sliders) just put together items to place & two somewhat challenging puzzles which you may or may not need a walkthrough for...located at GameBoomers.
The dialogue was fine, didn't seem too much or boring & it also did not have the dialogue tree of choices which I was glad of. So it turned out to be a good game to me. The story is interesting & easy to follow, no nonsense or running around for no good reason. You won't get lost or wonder where to go next. The voice acting is good especially the main character & her boss.
As the game progresses it gets better because the story is written well with several characters as suspects & a trip to Peru added a nice change to the gameplay & scenery. This is one game I can say had a good ending all though it was intentionally dark. Still, you could see well enough what was going on & it was intense! I also like how they leave you wondering about something, but if you followed the story closely, you'll figure it out. :)

(More customer reviews)i did this recently in windows, after having completed the "last sanctuary" for mac. my like for the last sanctuary caused me to purchase the resurrection. what i found is that the resurrection is very short and easy. i would normally give a poor rating for this except that the graphics were wonderful, the story engaging, and the atmosphere outstanding. for example, the game opens in eastern europe on a freezing night. the fields and farm buildings convey the chilling surroundings perfectly (incongruously, the pond is not frozen). despite its easiness, there were a couple of difficult places; i spent 2 days pixel hunting for one item in draculas castle, but it turned out to be large and in plain sight. dracula 2 takes the good aspects and adds a lot of length and difficulty.
i think that dracula 1 would be better as part of the second game rather than a separate game in itself.

Midnight Nowhere Review

It plays out like a survival horror game, except there's no way to die and the only use your character has for a gun is to shoot a locked door. The plot is odd in the extreme and only holds together by the barest thread of coincidence. You play to the end assuming All Will Be Revealed, only to find that the central mystery is not only not answered but not even mentioned. Excuse me?
That aside, game play is fairly smooth and logical, though there's an awful lot of looking for keys. It's a brain game, not a reflex game, so expect to do a lot of problem solving and no shooting. (And hours of pixel-hunting, sigh.) The walls you pass are often decorated with very funny subversive posters that seem to have been designed by a satirical comic screwing around with Photoshop (you know the type -- photos of ordinary people bulged out on one side and so on).
Incidently, you should take the Mature rating fairly seriously. There's a lot of cursing, many many many photos of nude women, and variously horribly slaughtered bodies around every corner. I mean, I've seen worse, but I'm not sure I'd be happy about seeing a 13-year-old playing this game.

(More customer reviews)I originally played this game back when I had my old Win 98 system, and I loved it....Kept the CD;won't part w/ it. The graphics were good (for it's time) and the storyline all meshed together nicely. The puzzles were imaginative-not too hard, not too easy. Unfortunately, it DOES NOT run on XP, so the only way to play it is to install Win. 98/ME on another drive or partician yours off and install one of those older OS's on it to play.....I wish someone would buy the rights to that game (since the company who made it no longer exists) so that it can be updated to run on XP. If anyone out there has access to an old OS, likes RP games & doesn't mind older graphics....I HIGHLY recommend this one.

(More customer reviews)I really did not appreciate this game at all. I love the Adventure Company, puzzle, and Myst-type games. But this just didn't meet my expectations; luckily I waited for it to come down to ten dollars before buying it (it is almost worth ten dollars).
The voice acting was pretty terrible, the protagonist being the worst, most stilted voice in the game. And he was a jerk.
The puzzles, that is the real puzzles, were unimpressive but at least a little challenging. The rest of the game seemed to be filler with boring dialogue and "run around and collect stuff" plot.
Lastly, the game was buggy for me. Perhaps it is because I am running Vista. But it would frequently crash during a save or load--which is rather annoying.
The scenery was pretty, but not well done for a second person, two dimensional setting. The scenes in Syberia were much nicer.
I really don't recommend this game at all, unless you're a hardcore adventure gamer and have the time to kill.

I write fiction/poetry and will play a game to put off my own writing or to clear my mind.Culpa Innata keeps me going even when it's difficult for a relatively new gamer. I cannot use all of the technical jargon to describe my experience but I know when I am compelled tp keep on playing! Other reviewers have done a fine job of decribing the game's content. I do disagree with comments about the language. I wasn't put off by it at all and I am a fairly conservative consumer. Culpa's content is never gratuitus. The game is beautifully executed and fun to play. Culpa Innata's package should be featured in your intro- for gamers like me who enjoy challenging adult adventure games.

Beyond Atlantis Review

(More customer reviews)I figured it would be good to have a Mac review of this game, since it's one of a few adventure games that made it to the Mac platform. Simply said, even though the game is not OS X compatible, the graphics and sound are pretty wonderful. I also enjoy being able to talk to other characters in the game. That said, the puzzles are hilarious, in that they make no logical sense. Success is basically based on guesswork and luck. Sometimes it's also necessary, in order to get more "clues," to talk to the same person about the same topic, even though that topic has already been discussed and is blacked out. This nonsensical aspect may prove frustrating to serious gamers, but I find it kind of fun, as I never take this stuff too seriously.
Seriously, though, it's not that good a game.

(More customer reviews)I really wanted this game to be good. Sexy spies, villians, codes and exotic locations...sweet.
The graphics were good with detailed locations. The interface was straightforward and the inventory easily managed. It's a linear game with limited pathfinding so you generally just had what you needed.
There were numerous puzzles throughout which were on the difficult side but were varied. They could be interesting but oddly timed, destroying any tension there might have been.
Holding conversations in enemy hallways was common. Transmitting reports over the open air using the real names of everyone unfortunate enough to have met you was ridiculous. Adventure games require you to suspend belief, but this could have been done better.

Opening scenes and clips disappointingly had no subtitles, which are available for the playing part. There was a lot of dialogue, but while it was required to advance, not a lot seemed to depend on anything you learned from that until later into the game.
It wasn't a bad plot to start with but the implementation went awry. You had no idea why you didn't get shot. Frequently. And why anyone with a brain would bother helping you. I found a walkthru was essential. In the end, a so-so B-movie with decent mechanics, graphics and a little style. For anyone who can get over expecting something better, has a sense of humor and a walkthru, it would be worthwhile. I've certainly played worse.
It ran fine on my midline gaming system with no technical difficulties.
