Football Manager 2011 Review

Football Manager 2011
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a longtime FIFA player and avid Premier League follower, I felt I knew the game as well as anybody. I had heard about this game, enormously popular in Europe, called Football Manager 11. A friend told me it was the "ultimate football sim", in his words. I didn't believe the hype. "I can't control the players?" I asked, and he nodded his head. He promised I would be more satisfied, with this game than almost every other.
So, after a few nudges, I downloaded the trial from Steam. Then I bought the game. And now, like millions of others across the world, I am hopelessly addicted to a football simulator. So much so that I had to write this review simply to clue in more people about the best way to destroy hours of your life.
Introductory points on Football Manager 11:
* You play the role of a football manager in a day to day, turn based system. Pick your team and hit continue and watch the options unfold.
* "Playing" the game primarily consists of several key actions: Buying / selling players, setting training schedules, setting formations, and interacting with the players and press.
* After you pick your Starting 11 + subs and motivate them to play their little hearts out, a match simulator begins with a 3d engine. Each of your players 40 "traits" or "stats" come into play as the match unfolds. From the sideline you can bark orders and at halftime you can encourage, praise, or insult your players, based on performance.
* This "hands off" nature of the game provides great satisfaction. When your 19 year old defender scores 4 goals, all headers from set pieces, you can sit there praising your own foresight in training his heading skill up to 16.
* Almost every league in the world is available to play. This includes La Liga, MLS, Premier League, Ligue 1, Serie A, Bundesliga, K-League, Mexican Premiera Division, etc. All divisions have their fun and playing in the lower leagues might be more enjoyable than the top ones!
* This game is endlessly replayable. You will love it, your girlfriend will hate it.
Now I don't just believe the hype, I promote it. Pick up this game if you want to see if you can be a better manager than any of the greats or better than that current deadbeat in your favorite team. When the game starts throwing snarky comments about how addicted you are, take them with a grain of salt: They are probably right. So don't forget about that pizza in the oven or your laundry, play this game.

Pippa Funnell : Secrets of the Ranch (PC-DVD) Review

Pippa Funnell : Secrets of the Ranch (PC-DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Secrets of the Ranch is the fourth Pippa Funnell game and the second Horsez, the followup to Golden Stirrup Challenge. Overall, it's an entertaining, fun and engaging game for fans of the series or horses in general. It's hardly what you'd call 'elaborate' as far as storyline and characters go, but that's really what you want form a Horsez game. The storyline is often cliched and predictable, but the adventure part of the storyline is often challenging. Emma, a young vet student, finds herself on the stud farm being run by Flora, the main chaarcter from the previous game. We also see returns from her best friend Carole and her former boyfriend, now husband, Migeul, though he's been renamed 'Micheal' in this game - a choice I find odd not just for the sake of a name-change, but choosing to 'Americanize' the name when the setting is a small countryside town in France. Emma and Flora's slightly eccentric nephew, Oliver, are pitted against the town's Mayor as he tries to seize the stud farm for land development.
The adventure storyline, in which the player has to undertake timed quests, find and use objects, and complete objectives, is dotted in amongst horse care, training in dressage, showjumping and cross-country, and taking part in competitions.
Horse care has changed very little since the previous games.
Dressage takes a turn for the worse however - while the previous Horsez game hit an excellent format, this one is choppy, lengthy to train and participate in with slow-motion zooming aerial camera angles, and forces the player to memorize tracks and moves and then complete them instead of being able to do everything on the spot. I'm an adult player who's been playing horse games for years; I can see kids really struggling with this. Showjumping and crosscountry have also taken slight turns for the worse, though not as severe as dressage. Jumps need to be approached correctly and the right speed chosen. Getting to the right speed is difficult, and there are jumps made where it is impossible to jump without bringing down a post and getting a fault, a major design mistake in my eyes. It should always be possible to succeed, certainly a few difficult jumps, but not this format.
In exploring or riding around the countryside there is a major advantage - a full-time map, which allows the player to teleport to any previously visited location. (Except during timed quests). However, this is severely limited by a frustrating time-limited day. Anything you do, teleporting included, takes up time out of your day, which has a forced ending (at 4AM, though any useful activity such as training and horse care end at 8PM). This wouldn't prove difficult if the time used wasn't so severe - taking care of your horse can take the better part of an entire day, getting from village to stud farm can take three hours. If this frustrating system were kept it needs to be adjusted so players have more time in a day - or better yet, returned to the schedule-based Golden Stirrup setup where though each day was limited to four activities, you could take all the time you needed to, and within a week there was plenty of time to accomplish what you needed to. Not the instance here, where fitting in enough training to even enter competitions is impossible.
The breeding center is a great addition however. Foals can be bred from parents of the player's choice, giving them different characteristics. I did find the breed and colour selection very limited though, a few more options there would have been excellent. Another slight problem I experienced was that in order to be able to praticipate in competitions you had to purchase a new horse outright at least twice. It would have been nice to keep the same horse throughout, which could have been easily achievable by allowing more time in each day, so the player could train a favourite horse from scratch.
Surprisingly, the graphics are nowhere near as lovely as Golden Stirrup - I wasn't expecting complete sophistication, but they're certainly subpar when compared to the beautiful environments of China or Tuscany from the previous game. It also got a little mundane always staying in the same place, after experiences the three unique locations in Golden Stirrup.
Overall while the characters and storyline will endear; frustrations over dressage and the limited span of time in the virtual day are the big downers here. Kids and horse-nut adults will enjoy this one, but it never manages to hit the excellence of Horsez: Golden Stirrup Challenge.

High Heat Baseball 2004 Review

High Heat Baseball 2004
Average Reviews:

I must agree with most of the other user reviews criticizing High Heat 2004.
Incredibly, THERE IS NO MOUSE SUPPORT for this supposed PC Game!
Whoever made the decision to sell out High Heat PC users this way should be fired immediately!
Not only is there no mouse support but the menu interface is a complete nightmare! It's literaly an ordeal just trying to set up and start a game!
I will never understand why a company will take a very good PC product and just tear it down for game consoles! 3DO has sold PC users out for game consoles!
Just like NBA Live 2003, High Heat 2004 has gone over to the dark side! It's no wonder that there is no demo. Five minutes with this intolerable interface would convince any PC User not to bother.
The graphics are better and the game is still fun to play but the terrible interface and many missing features ruin it.
The sound and color commentary have improved little, if at all.
I think it's time to send a message to companies like EAsports and 3D0 who sell out PC Users for consoles!
If I wanted to play a Playstation game, I would buy a Playstation!

World Wide Soccer Manager 2009 Review

World Wide Soccer Manager 2009
Average Reviews:

One of the biggest time traps of all time. This game will suck you in and spit you out hours later, you will jump for joy as you draw Man U at home and then cry next week when you lose to a relegation team. 09's AI is extremely intelligent and gone are the days where one uses the same formation and tactic through an entire season, now you literally have to make changes almost every 15 minutes. With plenty of new features and a flawless game engine, this game is the best [........] you will ever spend.

Worldwide Soccer Manager 2009 from Sega for the PC or Mac is an in-depth soccer management game. At the helm, you'll enter the new season with a wide array of all-new features. The most impressive update is the first-time-ever, real-time 3D match engine with motion captured animations. With over 5,000 playable teams and every management decision in the palm of your hand, you'll love watching your matches and decisions unfold from multiple camera angles as you compete in leagues around the world and major international tournaments.
Powerful 3D Match Engine Watch your match in real-time, or use the Match Time Bar to fast-forward through sluggish minutes or rewind key moments in the game. With this customization at your fingertips you can also choose the information you'd like to see during the match, such as latest scores or player performance stats for the match.
Engage Journalists, Train Players, and Get Help from Your AM No coach can do it all. Even the best need help from friends, so Worldwide Soccer Management 2009 comes equipped with an Assistant Manager. Your AM provides pre-match and in-match feedback on how the team is performing, and even delivers a few suggestions (hints) on how the team could play better. Every team has to deal with press. Good or bad, you're expected to attend pre- and post-match press conferences. When being interviewed by local and national journalists, make sure to choose your answers carefully because they could come back to haunt you later.
Speaking of journalists, you can tap into the media and learn all about the global soccer gossip. Worldwide Soccer Management 2009's simulation of real-life soccer is even more realistic with the addition of the transfer rumors system. Now you can view the hottest news about players and speculation about who might be transferred where.
Players can now be trained quickly and efficiently in a variety of new moves and positions -- even positions unfamiliar to them. For example, central defenders can learn to hold onto possession and wingers can be trained to cut inside and bypass the full backs. And for the first time, you can even play as a female manager and become the first woman to lead your favorite team to domestic and European glory.
All Your Favorite Players and Teams This version is fully updated for the 2008-2009 soccer season. You can view all the latest league, club and player data from over 5,000 playable clubs from over 50 countries, with more than 350,000 players and staff from around the world. Adobe Captivate 4 Review

Adobe Captivate 4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using this program full time since Aug 2009 developing thousands of slides, on numerous topics. The following is my ongoing journal. I foresee using this program for several more months before the product cycle ends...
Pros
1. Capturing a procedure is done fairly well. See item 12 below in the cons section. However, the output leaves a lot to be desired. If your presentation has a certain look and feel that you would like to match the raw capture is going to require editing - a lot of editing.
2. The on-board quiz/test generator is very easy to use and links to an LMS if one is setup to accept the data.
3. Setting up conditionals in the program for data-gathering and program manipulation is easy (provided you know what variables you would like to use and have a clear understanding of if...then statements).
4. Importing audio is easy. However, it must be edited and its final form before importing it to captivate. See items 7 and 19 in the cons section.
5. Rescaling of a project from one dimension to another, i.e. 800*600 to 1024*768 is very successful without distorting or compensating aspect ratio for the objects contained within.
6. The animation option is useful with the standard animations available, but they are limited and rather generic looking. Without an animation tool for creating/editing animations this feature is somewhat useful but limited in its applicability.
7. The ability to export the output in several output formats is a plus. However, the usefulness of these formats is condition specific.Cons
1. Captivate is operationally difficult to use.
2. Sometimes Captivate will not publish html/swf files with file names (title) exceeding more than a few characters - behavior is inconsistent. No Adobe documentation on file naming exists within the product manual or help files.
3. Over all object positioning and alignment in the development window is tedious. After custom alignment has been performed objects may move without prompt. Causes a great deal of rework.
4. Button object alignment using the text button feature appears normal in the development file but "may" be disjointed in the published version. Auto-align does not necessarily fix it.
5. Sometime hyperlinks to external files from within an .exe fail - inconsistent.
6. Sometimes hyperlinks revert to default file locations.
7. Open File or URL feature - This feature does not work as advertised. Sometimes designators to another file/url that are supposed to open in the current window fail. The current program just stalls and no action takes place. The only method I have been able to count on consistently is to designate that the file be opened in a new browser.
8. "Text to Speech" feature is to robotic sounding for final audio production.
9. The audio editing capabilities of Captivate are too rudimentary for audio editing.
10. Object orientation is limited to upright - no rotating of objects within the development environment.
11. Presentation Slide audio only appears on one time line. Additional audio must be created, removed, and reattached to other objects on the page if the audio is to be associated to an object event and not to timeline position.
12. The default TOC feature is clumsy unless you anchor it to a specific position.
13. Captured procedures require a great deal of editing and timing adjustment to be useful mid-stream in a presentation. Not as straight-forward as advertised.
14. Users must wait for captivate generated html pages (final output) to fully load before clicking any object of the page will stall and must be reloaded.
15. The global setting feature is great, unless you apply it.
16. The lock slide/object feature is slow to respond if using more than a few objects (20 or more) on a slide.
17. Roll-Over images, Roll-Over text, and the zoom area features are difficult to manage once more than a few instances are needed.
18. The over-all limit to 45-50 slides per presentation is a serious limitation for developing complex topics. Exceeding this causes many performance issues during and after development. Development file size that exceeds a few megabytes seems to cause the program to behave inconsistently. Source files are prone to crashing, and are generally unrecoverable.
19. Sometimes (often) saving a file fails but the program doesn't crash, it just closes. The Adobe Connect Pro user community recommends copying the slides to another file and save the new file.
20. Audio elements or queues sometimes have an inordinate amount of pops, static and clicks.
21. Hyper linking to files outside of a captivate file does not guarantee navigation back to the original file, and does not guarantee that the file will return to the last page viewed from the hyper-linked page.
22. The in-development review feature doesn't really show all the elements of a slide as it is intended. Review requires fully loading one of the simulated options or actually publishing the file to see if it functions as expected.
23. The Flash video option is useless without a flash generator/editing program to support it.
24. Sometimes, zooming into a slide when editing will render the file unusable.
25. Sometimes slide objects become unusable and must be replaced. If a slide object cannot be deleted the slide must be completely recreated.
26. Slide editing becomes increasingly sluggish as numerous elements are added to the slide.
27. Once an object has been created it may not be editable. Sometimes an object will accept a modification of settings, but not reflect those changes in the working or final version.
28. Font scripts in some text boxes are cut off by two or three pixels. The phenomenon seems to be largely absent if a text box is created and not adjusted for font size, color, or position. Of course there are adjustments for each of these properties and not being able to customize the properties without causing a flaw in the final product is in contradiction to the very existence of the property adjustment!
29. Button pause features do not necessarily pause slide audio!
30. Scripts and variables for custom interactions are very difficult to use. The scripting dialogue is inadequate, it does not behave predictably, and there is very little documentation on the topic available from either adobe or the public domain. Without this feature, complex navigation feedback is impossible.
31. The program locks up quite often. No matter whether you save often or not, just a few minutes of work in captivate is a lot of lost work. So, unless you're in the habit of saving after every single action you have performed, you will lose some work every time you use captivate.
32. When using the preview feature (F8) the program will occasionally stall. It's a waiting game. The program may restart after a few minutes (6-10) if you're lucky. This behavior is inconsistent. Wednesday Jan 6th around 9AM, program locked up for 15 minutes when running a preview. The same file had been being used for preview without any disruption in process prior to the malfunction. Same file acted normally until Friday the 8th when the program locked up again on a different file. This event started at 8:45AM. The condition is maintaining itself at 9:08AM. Program is now active again at 9:10 AM. Using the preview feature again at 10:05 AM. The program has stalled and is still inactive at 10:14 AM. At 10:18 AM the program is still inactive. At 10:24 AM the program is still inactive. At 10:30 AM the program is still inactive. At 10:35 AM the program is still inactive. At 10:41 the program is still inactive. Program cleared and started responding again at 10:46 AM. Tuesday, January 12, 2009: I started the F8 preview three times this morning and each of the two first times the preview opened, functioned normally and closed. I initiated a third time at 9:05 AM and it has stalled taking my system hostage for the last 18 minutes. The program released itself at 9:24 AM.
33. When adding an image to a slidelet the first attempt at configuring the new image in the slide may appear fuzzy or out of focus in the development window and the final output after publishing. Usually redoing the image add work will clear up the focus. While this isn't usually a crisis, it does require that the developer do the same task twice on a regular basis.
34. File/slide progress can be stilted from a non-identifiable cause. After developing numerous slides with similar elements one slide started pausing after .1 seconds, and remained in this mode for the entire progress of the slide. Nothing I could find with any single element of the slide had the property to allow for this type of behavior. The only way to get the slide to progress was to continually click the play button. It was possible to skip the slide by forcing advance using the customized buttons, but the only way to see the entire contents in the timeline for the slide was in .1 second increments - like watching a film one frame at a time. Resolution: created a whole new blank file, imported all existing slides and objects from offending file into new blank file. Problem solved...
35. Linking programs together is problematic. When developing a project I had decided to use the linking feature that would allow the end of one file to prompt the opening of another. But somewhere in the development process the feature stopped working - yes at one time it worked flawlessly. Now none of the files will...Read more›

I too have a newer iMac and yes, the CD-ROM is NOT recognised by the iMac, but you can download a small patch (created by a third party) at "MacFixit.com" that works great. The game itself is a wonderful transition from board game to computer game, however, I like to play against the CPU instead of other humans as it gets awfully crowded with more than one person around the iMac.

Microsoft Zoo Tycoon 2: African Adventure Expansion Pack

Though I always enjoy Zoo Tycoon 2, African Adventure is often more expensive than its worth. Its Expansion Pack Companion, Endangered Species, is of much better value.
African Adventure adds these animals: Aardvark, African Buffalo, African Spurred Tortoise, Barbary Ape, Bong, Caracal, Ethiopian Wolf, Gelada, Gerenuk(very cute!), Mandrill, Masai Giraffe, Meerkat, Nile Moniter, Pygmy Hippo, Ratel,Secretary Bird, Striped Hyena, Warthog, White Rhino, and the Wildebeest.
There are a few other features, including 'new' themes, campaigns, challenges, and Maps.
Though I enjoyed this game, I would definitly recommend Endangered Species vs. African Adventure

The CLS MD80 is awesome! The pack comes with Delta Airlines textures which is my favorite airline. Also comes with several other Airline textures. I figured out how to get the cabin view textures to work on my CLS MD81/82. In the sim icon there is a button called WV. I pushed to activate it and it activated my cabin view wing views on my CLS MD-81/82. It's a very realistic handle to it and has a very realistic cockpit. I give it 5 stars.

Farm Frenzy 3 Review

Farm Frenzy 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a huge fan of the Farm Frenzy series. I've played all of them and have enjoyed watching them improving and advance the game with each release. Melesta made some nice improvements with Farm Frenzy 3, but they also made a couple of changes that were unnecessary and harmed the overall enjoyment of the game.
For those not familiar with the Farm Frenzy series, it's a strategy plus time management game. Not all levels are pure speed. Some levels can only be completed by doing things in a certain order. The player is given a list of goals to complete within a certain amount of time. Those goals include either collecting money, produce, or manufacturing products from supplies either produced by the farm animals or bought. As the player collects more coins, they are able to upgrade their equipment. The `goal' of Farm Frenzy 3 is to help Scarlet become Farm Union President. To do that, she must help five friends from different areas of the world with their farm. This is the first version to have a story line and well, it's a weak one. It's there, but certainly will not win any prizes for originality or depth.

Instead of the map being streets that intersect and the player goes around the board, the map is divided into 5 sections representing different countries. Like with previous versions the player workers their way through each level, unlocking new equipment and upgrading supplies. Unlike earlier versions, the game play is not linear. There are only so many levels that can be played in each section before moving on to another section. Additionally, each section has animals that are unique. For example, Peru has big horn sheep that drop horns while Antarctica has walruses. Not every section will have animals that produce horns, adding to the strategy of needing to buy supplies in order to finish certain products. I like the way they designed the areas and the extra challenge created by not being able to simply raise money to buy the animal needed. Farm Frenzy 2 and Pizza Party both required buying supplies, but version 3 enhanced this feature and utilized the plane well.
Farm Frenzy has always had adorable characters and this time is no exception. The sheep are huggable cute. The animation has been improved from previous versions and the new animals are great. The penguins flipping fish are exceptionally entertaining. The developers have made some great improvements from earlier versions and those efforts are well appreciated.
The developers also created a great way to utilize the bears and predators. In the past, the players has had to capture these and then sell them for ridiculously low amounts. With the addition of the `fitting' room, those predators can now be dressed up and sold for an incredibly high amount. It makes catching and storing them worth wild, as well as making it easy to earn cash in a hurry.
I was very happy to see the developers decided to go back to shorter `recipes'. I enjoyed Pizza Party, but most of the difficulty in that game was remembering the ingredients to make the requested pizza. Farm Frenzy 3's biggest recipe requires 4 items making the game much more enjoyable. This was a great improvement by the developers.
There were some parts I didn't like. I HATE how they changed the dogs. The dogs used to keep the predators away and help cage them. Now they bulldoze the predators, removing both the dog and the predator from the board. There are a couple levels where the dogs removing the bears is the only challenging part of the level. When the player needs to raise money with the bears, the dogs prevent that from happening. These are suppose to be helpful to the player, not a hindrance. This is my number one complaint with the game.
I missed the long level. Usually there is one level that takes about 40 minutes to play. The player has to start by trapping predators to raise the money to buy animals and complete their goals. This time there isn't one. There's still the award for taking at least 30 minutes to win a level, but the longest level is approximately 15 minutes long. To win this award, the player has to simply set there for 30 minutes and do nothing. Anyway, I would have liked to have had the one long level. They were always a lot of fun.
Melesta needs to invest in beta testers that will catch things like awards that can only be won by sitting idle or typos. There's really no excuse for some of the errors that are in the game. The lack of attention to detail is evident in a lot of time management games, but some things should have been caught and corrected before being released (i.e. Funny's Arm instead of Funny's Farm). Also, it's obvious whoever did the story got kinda tired of it. Usually there's at least a we did it. Instead after getting so far the story line just disappears. It's a little thing, but shows a lack of attention to details. Lastly, the ethnic stereotyping is probably suppose to be funny, but I'm not sure those being depicted will find it so.
Overall, Farm Frenzy 3 is a great game. It is quite a bit harder than the previous versions. However, it is possible to get gold the first time through the game. It is challenging, fun, and addicting and a nice fix for strategy and time management junkies.
