A320 Jetliner Review

A320 Jetliner

What a disappointment! I had been flying for some time the A321 that comes with FSX but at some point I came to know that this simulated aircraft is quite different from the real one. So, in an attempt to learn the Airbus systems and controls (quite different from Boeing's) as they really are, I bought this A320. When I first looked at the cabin, I thought I had made a mistake opening the default A321 from FSX. Everything seemed so similar! But no...I had opened the "new one". I looked for the Airbus FCU with all the managed and selected functions, the very different arrangement of buttons and displays but there were none... all I could see was a copy of the FSX A321!!! The only innovation was the FMGC... but even this was a deception. It is very simplistic and limited in functions... not even close to serious flight planning and management!

757 Captain Review

757 Captain
Average Reviews:

I was told to expect great things from the creator of this addon, Captain Sim, i was not disappointed when i installed this aircraft and took it for a test flight.
As mentioned in my title, this is my first payware addon for my flight simming. after finding out that this addon was being sold on amazon for half the price as what is listed on the Captain Sim website, i had to pull the trigger.
Before i purchased this, i was not satisfied with the freeware 757's being offered for Flight Simulator X, i think all of them were converted from FS2004 use, and none of them had a virtual cockpit for FSX. I am getting used to flying from the flight deck rather than flying from spot view from behind the aircraft and virtual cockpit is really useful.
This dvd comes with versions for both Flight Simulator 2004(fs9) and Flight Simulator X(FSX), comes packaged in a convenient plastic dvd case like most games being sold these days(i thought it would arrive in a cardboard ox like the older games did)
This dvd also comes with a 100 page manual that describes instruments.
This addon includes the 757-200 with 2 types of engines and winglet options as well as the -300 with 2 engine types and winglets as well as a freighter version.
one last thing to note is that by purchasing this product, you will have to use the support on the [...] site, currently, [...] requires a order number to log on to its site and you do not get this number when purchasing this product here on amazon or from Just Flight's website(there is an update patch available for this version on the just flight website)

Traffic X Expansion for MS Flight Simulator X Review

Traffic X Expansion for MS Flight Simulator X
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What do you get? This DVD-ROM installs into your FSX Simobjects Folder. You get 97, go ahead count em', 97 folders of AI Aircraft, each with up to 60 different liveries (or paint jobs) of various airlines around the world. Passenger jets, Commuter Turboprops, Cargo Carriers and even some Military Stuff. The DVD also comes with FSX Service Pack 2 (SP2), in case you don't have it already. SP2 is required prior to installation. When you run the Setup program, it will recognize if you do not have SP2, and prompt you to cancel the install of the Traffic Expansion Addon. When you do this, SP2 will install automatically. Run Setup Program again to install the Traffic Expansion Addon.
Does it work? Yes. Does it work properly? No! By this I mean the aircraft.cfg (aircraft configuration) files for each of the 97 folders of new AI aircraft have serious deficiencies. The aircraft.cfg files in each folder are plain ordinary text files that you can open with wordpad or whatever. They instruct FSX how to build and paint the planes that you see in the Flight Simulator Environment. It starts with a name. Each variation of each plane requires a unique name. Then there is the model, which is basically a plain gray 3D shape of an airplane. The texture files, which are .bmp files (also known as paintjobs) get applied to the model to give it the colors and definition of an airline (American, Air India etc). Then there's the atc statements, and this is where the problems are found. Many of the "atc_airline=xxx" [where xxx is the callsign of an airline] statements have incorrect callsigns. Some are one word and should be two. Some are two words and should be one. Some are just plain misspelled, or wrong altogether. American Airlines for example. You would expect the FSX Air Traffic Control (ATC) to address American Airlines Flight 43, as "American 43". But whatever genius designed this add-on misspelled the callsign as "atc_airline=merican". FSX ATC does not recognize the callsign of "Merican" and will address the plane simply as "43". When all you hear is a flight number, without an airlines callsign preceding it, you wonder, Who's that?? So get ready to do some work on your own, to get this to function at 100%. The aircraft.cfg files can be opened, edited, and saved where they are. I myself am quite familiar with a number of airline callsigns (British Airways is "Speed Bird", Virgin Atlantic is "Virgin", Southwest is "Southwest" and so on), but not all of them (South African is "Springbok", Air Portugal is "TAP" etc). There is a listing on Wikipedia that I have found very useful.
Ok that's the callsigns. Some aircraft folders take less than a minute, with only 1-3 variations. Others, such as the Boeing 757 have approx. 60 different liveries, whose atc statements have to be checked, and that takes longer. Once finished, you can be content with this much, or if you really want more realism like I do, then you've got even more work to do. While you're going through each of the folders and working on the aircraft.cfg files of the really big planes (Boeing 747,767,777, A330, A340, A380 etc), you'll also notice that there's no "atc_heavy=1" statement. The big boys are often referred to as heavies, by Air Traffic Control. If a United Airlines Boeing 747, flight 820, taxi's up to the line, you would expect to hear ATC say, "United 820 Heavy, ....", but without the "atc_heavy=1" statement in the cfg file for that plane, you will simply hear "United 820, ....". So while you're editing the callsign for the American Boeing 767 to be "American" and not "Merican", insert that "atc_heavy=1" statement, along with the rest of the atc statements and get both taken care of the first time, so that you don't have to go back through them again.
You get a ton of different types of planes, used by carriers, all around the world, and you see them where you would normally expect to see them. At Frankfurt, Germany, you'll see Lufthansa, Air France and Austrian, but not Jet Blue or Southwest. You'll find Southwest at Las Vegas and Phoenix, but not in Hong Kong. Not only do you find the airlines you expect to see, but you find them grouped together with each other (like all Continental Airlines at Newarks Terminal C) and not spread out all over the place, as if randomly placed or mixed. Included with the folders of aircraft is another folder of AFCADs. An AFCAD is .bgl file that is like a map of a particular airport. It can be edited with an AFCAD editor like AFX to change Clearance, Ground, ATIS and Tower frequencies, taxiways, and parking and gate areas. The gate and parking areas within the AFCAD can be edited for what size aircraft they will accomodate (Small, Medium, Heavy, Cargo etc), the gate id (Example Gate C 81), as well as, the atc parking codes for airlines that FSX ATC will direct to park in it. So for example, if you have a group of gates that have an ATC parking code of "COA", and the aircraft.cfg files your Continental AI planes have "atc_parking_types=GATE" and "atc_parking_codes=COA", then your Continental AI planes will be found at these gates with the 737 and smaller aircraft at the Small Gates, 757 and 767 aircraft in medium size gates and 777 aircraft in the Heavy Gate spaces.
So bottom line, is this add-on worth the money? I think so. The programmer did a top-notch job of building the planes, and editing the traffic.bgl file so that it appears as "Real World" as possible. The ficticous airlines like World Travel and American Pacific are no longer to be found in the AI flight sim environment, simply because they've been edited out of the traffic.bgl file. I believe they still exist and can still be selected and flown by you, you just won't see them as AI aircraft anymore. The big drawback is that half of the airline callsigns are screwed up, you have to fix them yourself, and you're left wondering why something like this wasn't corrected before the software was released? Some callsigns like Continental and Delta are correct most of the time, but sometimes you'll find a Continental jet with "atc_airline=CONT", whoops, gotta make that "atc_airline=CONTINENTAL". Luckily, like I said earlier, the aircraft.cfg files are text files that can be opened with Word, Wordpad, Notepad etc, corrections can be made and saved easily. But with 97 folders of add-on airplane models, and up to 60 different liveries per model, well, you do the math! That's allot of checking, fixing and saving. This add-on will function without any additional work by you, but it just won't feel right. So I guess it comes down to what the individual is satisfied with. If your quite technical, know your way around aircraft.cfg and AFCAD files, then by all means, go for it. On the contrary if you're not very technical (afraid of messing something up if you touch it), and will not be comfortable with the somewhat lack of realism (the messed up callsigns), then you might want to avoid purchasing this update, unless you know someone technical who can assist you. Hope this review helps. Good luck and enjoy if you decide to purchase it. :)

In response to the first review.... your review sounds suspiciously biased against CLS. All of those problems you mentioned do not exist if you PROPERLY install the service pack. There was never a problem with clicking sounds or GPWS?? I'm sorry you did not like the product and I'm glad you got a refund. However, there is a problem with your computer if all of those things you mentioned did not work. I'd personally stay away from PSS since they closed down. If you want the best of both worlds, merge the Wilco Panel with the CLS Airbus. Wilco's model is JUNK and is not deserving of that panel.

Space Shuttle Expansion for Flight Simulator X Review

Space Shuttle Expansion for Flight Simulator X
Average Reviews:

This sim has some great virtual cockpits. Unfortunately the install was a pain. After 2 emails with support I finally figured out the issue on my own. It will not install properly if FSX is not in the default install location. Even though it appears to find and install to the correct location it will not install one of the .dll's.
As for the flight characteristics- I am disappointed. In the reentry mission you get to simply sit there and watch until atmospheric flight is possible. Their documentation is lacking. Although they provide a 1000+ page Shuttle Manual there is nothing for the sim addon itself. The one reference I could find referred to to manuals/documentation that were not on the disc nor were they installed. Also the FSX graphics at orbit were disappointing to me as well though that is no fault of this addon.
If you really want to fly the Shuttle X-Plane is a much better choice and costs the same for a whole simulator! Even better is the Orbiter Sim which was written by a PhD, has a large community, and is free!
I don't recommend this product.

Fighter Pilot 2 Review

Fighter Pilot 2

I bought this game to compliment the short list of jet fighters that FSX has to offer; and it has most of the popular aircraft, however controling any one of the aircraft is a chore. By comparison, the one jet fighter that FSX has seems like a generation ahead in it's flight model as well as the cocpit graphics. The graphics of the exterior of the aircraft are near flawless, but that is where the excitement tapers off. It seems apparent that Microsoft didn't share any of it's design secrets.

I studied Aerospace Engineering in college. I've found all I wanted from this software. The flight characteristics are extremely real, together the same with the Avionics. However, you'll need a powerful video card to get it work to its full capacity, and the virtual cockpit at night doesn't look as great as the Microsoft version. I would also prefer them to give us a more detailed manual to operate the Flight Management System. Q&A assistance at JustFlight is very helpful. This is not a "computer game", you'll need to plan your trip before making the full use of all the systems.

FlyingClub X Expansion for MS Flight Simulator X/2004 DVD Review

FlyingClub X Expansion for MS Flight Simulator X/2004 DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The flight models for the aircraft are completely unrealistic in every regard. As a pilot who flies a C152 at least once a week, I can tell you first hand that the C152 flight model in Flying Club X is completely ridiculous. It flies way faster than any real C152 I've been in; it 'crashes' in calm air from overstress well below Vne; the engine sounds more like a powered parachute engine and nothing like a C152; the trim behavior is totally unrealistic requiring full down trim for level flight; you can't slip the plane; the yoke gets in the way of being able to see the VSI in virtual cockpit mode; the autorun program doesn't even work - which will be your first indication that shoddy programming awaits you.
If you are the type of sim pilot who could care less about how real the planes behave, and only care about adding more 'pictures' to your airplane selection list, then by all means get this.
However if you care about sim realism even a little bit, then steer clear of this product - it will teach you nothing at all about flying the planes represented.

The CLS MD80 is awesome! The pack comes with Delta Airlines textures which is my favorite airline. Also comes with several other Airline textures. I figured out how to get the cabin view textures to work on my CLS MD81/82. In the sim icon there is a button called WV. I pushed to activate it and it activated my cabin view wing views on my CLS MD-81/82. It's a very realistic handle to it and has a very realistic cockpit. I give it 5 stars.
